Neighbourhood Strategy Focus Group - Rainbow Edition

WNDG is happy to be partnering with the City of Waterloo to hold a focus group on their Neighbourhood Strategy for members of Waterloo's rainbow community!

From the City of Waterloo's Neighbourhood Strategy website:

"Strong, connected, and vibrant neighbourhoods are beneficial to individuals and the community as a whole. The City of Waterloo greatly values its neighbourhoods and wants to support residents in creating even stronger more vibrant neighbourhoods!

We know the best neighbourhood initiatives are resident-led, but we also know that the city can play a role.

We need your input to develop a neighbourhood strategy that will clarify the supports the city can provide to empower residents to create strong, connected and vibrant neighbourhoods."

Space is limited, so priority will be given to residents of the City of Waterloo. Please RSVP to Janet at neighbourhoods@waterloo.ca, being sure to indicate whether or not you are a Waterloo resident.

Wednesday Night Discussion Group

Discussion groups are informal gatherings with participants setting the course for the evening’s discussion. Everyone is encouraged to bring along newspapers, magazines, academic articles, or other media likely to be of interest to the queer community, if they feel they will stimulate discussion.

These groups are formally facilitated, though the guidelines are generally relaxed to accommodate a more social discussion environment.

The group will be held in Room 3412 in the Environment 3 Building at the University of Waterloo. Those visiting the campus can check out the University of Waterloo Campus Map for more detailed directions. The location is close to both public transit and parking (there is a fee for Visitor Parking).

Self-Defense and the LGBTQ Community

Dialogue groups provide an opportunity for participants to engage with members of the local community on specific issues of interest. Community members with specific expertise in the evening’s topic are invited to co-facilitate the discussion. This evening, we will be discussing "Self-Defense and the LGBTQ Community", facilitated by Sensei Joel Larose of Larose Karate.

We keep hearing that the world is getting safer for LGBT people. However, we continue to hear about incidents of gay bashing, bullying, suicide, etc. What if you could avoid, or at least mitigate those threats just by learning some self-defense techniques?

For this discussion, we will be discussing the various benefits of learning self-defense and martial arts for members of the LGBT community. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing as there may be an opportunity to learn some simple self-defense activities.

Sensei Joël Larose is a 3rd Degree Black Belt in Shorin-Ryu Shorinkan karate, and is the owner and head instructor of Larose Karate. He has been pursuing his love for karate for many years, and teaching at other dojos since 2007, and opened Larose Karate in 2014.
Joël will give his perspective on being gay in the martial arts world, and being a martial artist in the gay world.

Breaking the Silence on Hidden Violence: Addressing Hate Crime & Violence Against the LGBTQ Community in Waterloo Region

There is no good way to soften the first paragraph introducing a discussion night on hate crime and violence. If there is, I don’t have the subtlety to do it. Essentially, violence is a symptom of a society that is out of balance. Where ever violence is allowed to exist, the health and well-being of individuals and the community becomes eroded. Sadly, violence against LGBTQ individuals is not new in our community, our province or our country.
What is a hate crime? What’s the difference between a hate crime & a hate incident? What is the impact of unaddressed hate crime in our community? How do we support someone who has been a victim of a hate crime? What is our community doing to address hate crime?

This could be a heavy topic depending on where the discussion leads. WNDG strives to be a safe space where people can speak honestly and openly. At the same time, there is an awareness that doing so with a very personal topic such as violence could be triggering for oneself and others. This discussion is not asking people to share their personal experiences. Mackenzie Turow (one of the discussion leaders) is available to respond if you do become triggered by the discussion.

Mackenzie Turow is currently working on the Addiction Supportive Housing team at House of Friendship as an addiction counsellor to support adults with complex and multiple health concerns. She was born and raised in Kitchener, Ontario and has been working at non profit social service organizations in this community for the past nine years. She completed the Master of Social Work program at Wilfrid Laurier University in 2014.

Juanita Metzger is a community development and engagement practitioner in the Waterloo Region. Her adventures in development and community building span across her professional capacity with the Waterloo Region Crime Prevention Council (WRCPC) and various neighbourhoods projects including community gardens, Little Libraries of KW and other small creative community projects. Juanita is current representing WRCPC’s membership on the Rainbow Community Council and is part of the Breaking the Silence on Hidden Violence Working Group focused on preventing hate crime against the LGBTQ community in Waterloo Region.
