Self-Defense and the LGBTQ Community

  • ACCKWA Suite 203, 639 King Street West Kitchener, ON, N2G 1C8 Canada (map)

Dialogue groups provide an opportunity for participants to engage with members of the local community on specific issues of interest. Community members with specific expertise in the evening’s topic are invited to co-facilitate the discussion. This evening, we will be discussing "Self-Defense and the LGBTQ Community", facilitated by Sensei Joel Larose of Larose Karate.

We keep hearing that the world is getting safer for LGBT people. However, we continue to hear about incidents of gay bashing, bullying, suicide, etc. What if you could avoid, or at least mitigate those threats just by learning some self-defense techniques?

For this discussion, we will be discussing the various benefits of learning self-defense and martial arts for members of the LGBT community. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing as there may be an opportunity to learn some simple self-defense activities.

Sensei Joël Larose is a 3rd Degree Black Belt in Shorin-Ryu Shorinkan karate, and is the owner and head instructor of Larose Karate. He has been pursuing his love for karate for many years, and teaching at other dojos since 2007, and opened Larose Karate in 2014.
Joël will give his perspective on being gay in the martial arts world, and being a martial artist in the gay world.
